What Is the Starbucks Iced Chaider?
Chaider is a portmanteau of chai and cider, and the drink is exactly that: the black tea chai concentrate Starbucks uses in its lattes, combined with apple juice instead of milk, and shaken with ice the way a Refresher is. The result is thin, cold and tart-sweet, with the cinnamon and clove of the chai sitting on top of the apple.
It arrived as part of the fall menu and it sits in the shaken tea family in the app rather than with the lattes, which is why it is available in a Trenta. There is no foam, no whip and no dairy unless you add them.
How the Iced Chaider Is Made
The barista pumps chai concentrate into a shaker, adds apple juice and ice, shakes, and pours into the cup. The pump count follows the standard scale, three in a Tall and four in a Grande, so the spice ratio stays constant across sizes and the juice does the diluting.
Because there is no milk, the drink does not separate and it does not go watery as quickly as an iced latte. It is also one of the few chai drinks with zero fat and zero protein, which shows in the calorie count.
Iced Chaider Sizes and Calories
Four sizes, with the Trenta as the only chai drink at 30 fl oz. Calories track the juice.
| Item | Tall | Grande | Venti | Trenta |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Iced Chaider | $5.85 / 60 cal | $6.15 / 90 cal | $6.35 / 130 cal | $6.95 / 180 cal |
The Trenta at 180 calories and $6.95 is the size that makes this drink cheap per ounce; the Grande at $6.15 is the size most people order.
Iced Chaider vs Iced Chai Latte
The same concentrate leads to two very different drinks once you swap milk for juice.
| Iced Chaider | Iced Chai Latte | |
|---|---|---|
| Grande calories | 90 | 190 |
| Sugar (g) | 20 | 31 |
| Caffeine (mg) | 30 | 60 |
| Fat (g) | 0 | 3.5 |
| Dairy | None | 2% milk by default |
| Largest size | Trenta | Venti |
| Grande price | $6.15 | $6.05 |
The Iced Chai Latte is the creamier, more filling drink. The Chaider is the one to pick when you want the spice on a warm day and would rather not drink a glass of milk.
Does the Iced Chaider Have Caffeine?
Yes, but not much: 30 mg in a Grande, roughly half of an Iced Chai Latte and under a fifth of a Grande cold brew. The tea in the concentrate is the only source. The apple juice contributes none, and there is no decaf version because the concentrate itself is not offered decaf.
Customizing the Iced Chaider
Most add-ons work against the drink. A few help.
- Extra pumps of chai: the best way to make it spicier. Each pump adds about 20 calories.
- Light ice: more juice per cup and a sweeter drink; standard ice keeps it sharper.
- Cinnamon dolce sprinkles: free, and they push it further toward cider.
- Splash of oat milk: turns it into a thin latte. Fine, but at that point the Iced Chai Latte is the better order.
- Vanilla sweet cream cold foam: popular in photos, but it adds 35 to 70 calories to a drink whose appeal is being light.
Who the Iced Chaider Suits
It suits people who like chai spice but not milk, anyone avoiding dairy who does not want to pay a nondairy surcharge, and anyone who wants a fall flavor at under 100 calories. It is a reasonable order for kids in a Tall, at 60 calories and 30 mg or less of caffeine.
It does not suit anyone expecting a creamy drink, and at 20 g of sugar in a Grande it is not sugar free; the juice and the sweetened concentrate both contribute.
