Starbucks Rewards

Stars are earned on spend and redeemed at five fixed tiers. The programme is simple on the surface, and where it gets interesting is which tier you spend at.

Starbucks Star Redemption Tiers

Five tiers, fixed nationally. What each one is worth in dollars depends on your store, since Starbucks sets prices locally.

StarsRedeems forNotes
25CustomisationAn extra espresso shot, a dairy alternative, a syrup or a cold foam added to a drink you are already buying.
100Brewed coffee, hot tea or bakery itemThe entry redemption. Best value when applied to a bakery item rather than a drip coffee.
200Handcrafted drink or hot breakfastWhere most people redeem. A large customised drink here returns more per Star than a small one.
300Lunch sandwich, protein box or saladThe food tier. Worth comparing against two separate 200 Star drink redemptions.
400Select merchandise or packaged coffeeThe lowest return per Star in most cases, since packaged goods are priced below the drink line.

How Stars Are Earned

The earn rate depends on how you pay. Money loaded onto a Starbucks Card or the app balance first, then spent from that balance, earns at the higher rate. A credit or debit card tapped directly at the counter earns at the lower rate. That difference is the single biggest lever on how fast a balance grows, and it costs nothing to switch.

Bonus Star promotions, Double Star Days, birthday rewards and personalised challenges layer on top of the base rate. Those come through the app rather than being advertised in store, which is the practical reason to keep notifications on.

Which Tier Is Worth Redeeming At

The tiers are fixed in Stars but not in value. A 200 Star redemption on a large customised drink captures a much higher menu price than the same 200 Stars on a small brewed coffee, so the return per Star varies by a wide margin depending on what you apply it to.

The 25 Star customisation tier is the one most people ignore and it is quietly efficient, because an extra shot or a cold foam carries a real charge that the Stars absorb entirely. The 400 Star merchandise tier is usually the weakest, since packaged goods sit below the handcrafted drink line on price.

Where Rewards Does Not Work

Licensed stores are the gap. A Starbucks inside a grocery chain, an airport terminal, a hotel or a university campus is run by that operator under licence, and Rewards handling varies. Some accept Stars, some accept the card but do not earn, and some do neither.

The store directory lists Rewards redemption among the amenities for stores that report it, which is the quickest way to check before relying on a balance.

Rewards and the Menu

A redemption does not change what is in the cup. Calories, sugar and caffeine are identical on a paid drink and a redeemed one, which is worth remembering when a free drink tempts you into a larger size than usual. Every item page on this site carries the full panel per size, and the nutrition calculator totals a whole order.

Starbucks Rewards FAQ

How do you earn Stars at Starbucks?
Stars come from spending, at a higher rate when you pay with a preloaded Starbucks Card or the app balance than when you pay with a card at the counter. Bonus Star promotions, birthday rewards and challenges add to the base rate.
How many Stars for a free drink?
200 Stars redeems a handcrafted drink, which is where most members redeem. 100 Stars covers a brewed coffee, hot tea or bakery item, and 25 Stars adds a customisation to a drink you are already buying.
Do Starbucks Stars expire?
Yes. Stars expire on a rolling basis after a set period from when they were earned, so a balance saved for a long time loses its oldest Stars first. Check the current expiry terms in the app, since Starbucks has changed them before.
What is the best value redemption?
Per Star, the 200 tier applied to a large customised drink usually returns the most, because that is where the underlying menu price is highest relative to the Star cost. The 400 tier on packaged goods usually returns the least. Exact value depends on your store's prices, which Starbucks sets locally.
Can I earn Stars at licensed Starbucks stores?
Not always. Licensed locations inside grocery chains, airports, hotels and campuses handle Rewards differently, and some do not participate at all. The store directory lists which locations note Rewards redemption among their amenities.
Is Starbucks Rewards free to join?
Yes. It costs nothing to join, and it needs only an account in the Starbucks app or on the Starbucks website.
