The Starbucks Caffè Americano, Explained
The Caffè Americano is espresso shots topped with hot water, which gives a cup the size of a brewed coffee with the flavor of espresso. At Starbucks it is one of the few drinks where the caffeine climbs with every size, because each cup step adds a shot: one in a Short, two in a Tall, three in a Grande, four in a Venti.
How it tastes
Cleaner and more concentrated than brewed coffee, with a thin crema on top and the roasted, slightly bitter edge of the Signature Roast. It is 15 calories in a Grande with no sugar, and 225 mg of caffeine, which is more than a Grande latte or a Grande cold brew. A Venti carries 300 mg.
How to order it
Black is the standard. A splash of milk rounds it without changing the calories much; a pump of syrup makes it a lightly sweet, low calorie alternative to a flavored latte. Ask for "less water" for a stronger, hotter cup or "room" if you plan to add milk. Blonde espresso makes it smoother and slightly higher in caffeine. The Iced Caffè Americano is the same drink over cold water and ice.
Compared with brewed coffee and cold brew
Brewed Pike Place Roast is cheaper, smoother and slightly higher in caffeine per cup, but it is a different flavor: brewed, not pulled. Cold Brew is the cold equivalent, lower in acid. A Caffè Latte is this drink with steamed milk in place of the water.
Who it is for
Black coffee drinkers who want espresso flavor, and anyone counting calories or sugar. It is the cheapest espresso drink on the menu at $4.25 for a Short and $4.75 for a Grande at the reference store, and the strongest hot drink for the money.
