The Starbucks Caramel Frappuccino Blended Beverage, Explained
The Caramel Frappuccino is the drink most people picture when they hear the word Frappuccino: coffee, milk, ice and caramel syrup blended thick, with whipped cream and a buttery caramel sauce on top. It has been on the menu since the Frappuccino line launched in 1995, and it is still the best selling flavor in the range.
How it tastes
Sweet, cold and creamy, with the caramel leading and the coffee a background note. The whipped cream and sauce on top are the richest part. A Grande is 380 calories with 54 grams of sugar and 90 mg of caffeine, roughly the sugar of a can and a half of soda, and a Venti reaches 470 calories. It is a dessert, and it is honest about it.
How to order it
The biggest lever is the whipped cream: leaving it off saves about 80 calories. Nonfat milk saves another 30 or so. Starbucks also has a "light" Frappuccino base with fewer calories at some stores; asking for it "light" or "skinny" gets a version closer to 250 calories. For more coffee flavor, add a shot of espresso, or ask for it affogato style with a hot shot poured over the top. Extra caramel drizzle is the most requested upgrade.
Compared with the other Frappuccinos
The Mocha Cookie Crumble and the Caramel Ribbon Crunch are heavier, both above 400 calories in a Grande. The Vanilla Bean Crème has the same calories with no coffee at all. A Coffee Frappuccino, the plainest coffee version, drops to about 230 calories in a Grande.
Who it is for
It is a treat, and the drink kids and teenagers order most. Adults tend to keep it for a hot afternoon or a reward. A Grande is $6.55 for pickup at the reference store, one of the higher prices on the drink menu, and the Venti is $7.15.
